The holiday season is a beautiful time for gathering, giving back and for spending time with loved ones. According to some recent studies, it can also be a source of excess waste. But worry not - there are plenty of steps you can take to reduce, reuse and repurpose this holiday season, especially when it comes to gifting. Here are some of my favorite ways to cut down on holiday wrapping.
REUSE OLD BAGS AND TISSUE PAPER
Be sure to hold onto cute gift bags and tissue paper! They always add a little extra love to your gift, and you don’t have to go out and buy anything new. Simply wrap up your item in tissue paper, place it in a bag, then add some extra paper on top so it peeks out. Done and done!
TRY SOMETHING REUSABLE AND UNIQUE
The Japanese furoshiki method for wrapping is one that comes with an extra gift – the wrapping itself! Here’s how to do it:
1. Lay a piece of square fabric down (big enough for your item) and place the gift near the end of one corner.
2. Wrap the corner of the fabric over your gift, then start rolling it to the end. Make sure you’re pulling the sides of the material as you go along to ensure a tight seal.
3. Once you get to the end, take the two sides and tie them together twice to form a knot. It’s that easy!
NO WRAPPING? NO PROBLEM.
Honor your inner child by asking your giftee to close their eyes and hold their hands out. Once they’re closed, place the gift in their hands and surprise! No gift wrapping needed.
